My Teaching Philosophy
Mrs. Lamp believes that the classroom environment should encourage teachers and students to question, explore, discover, and respond thoughtfully to one another. Her students are encouraged to synthesize from a range of sources, to identify connections among works, and to consider the relationships among reading, writing, and thinking.
Reading
Students in Mrs. Lamp’s class will read a wide variety of common texts chosen to foster a love of literature and language. Our study of these texts will illuminate the shared concerns and the differing styles of writers from diverse backgrounds, locations, and eras. Through close reading and other forms of active engagement, students will explore various literary genres, forms, periods, themes, styles, and techniques. Extensive discussion, written analysis, and project-based work accompany text selections.
Writing
Eleventh graders will also practice many types of writing. Mrs. Lamp prioritizes writing time in class, encourages active writers’ workshop participation, gives clear and thorough feedback, and focuses on explicitly teaching various writing strategies. She emphasizes the writing process as all students learn to organize, develop, and write within the major forms of analytical, informative, personal, and creative writing. As they build their writing portfolios, students tackle short and sustained pieces, including memoir, literary-critical, informative, persuasive, and narrative writing.
Grammar & Vocabulary
Mrs. Lamp’s course emphasizes the importance of clear and effective communication. Throughout the school year, students engage in a rigorous study of the fundamental structures of English grammar, practice writing clear and coherent sentences, and develop strong vocabularies. These skills are vital to their performance on the ACT and in their future workplaces.
Speaking & Listening
Students in Mrs. Lamp’s class become active participants in interesting and meaningful class discussions, using a wide variety of discussion models, and they develop confidence and poise through engagement with various forms of formal oral communication, including a group presentation, a video project, and a 5-7 minute speech.
