The Accused: Small Group Reading Assignment

Introductory Cited Research Assignment

The Crucible is an allegorical retelling of the McCarthy-era red scare in the United States after World War II. Based on historical accounts, The Crucible, which can mean “a severe testing or trial of faith,” is set during the 1692 Salem Witchcraft Trials when several young girls accused innocent town members of witchcraft, possibly to avoid getting into trouble for entertaining ideas of witchery themselves. The playwright, Arthur Miller, was himself dragged into the McCarthy trials of 1954. This play was his response.

With a small team, you will research the witch trials or the 1950’s Red Scare. The links below may be helpful to you in your research quest.
